Temperament and health are the most important factors, when you choose a
dog.
When you look at the temperament, you've to choose a puppy, which
harmonize well with your own temperament. Remember puppies in the same
litter are different.
A good health secures the dog a good and long life and saves you
veterinarian bills and lots of worries and sorrow.
There
are other thing, you must consider, before you choose your dog.
In principal does a Bull Terrier puppy, which grows to be beautiful,
cost the same as a puppy, which will turn out to be less fortunate. So why not
try and find one, who is close to the standard. Especially if you would like to
show the dog or maybe even breed it.
But you can never expect to buy a "show and breeding star" from puppy
hood. If you're looking for such a dog, you've to buy a mature dog - and in that
case the prize will be quite different from what you'll pay for a puppy.
You
must always choose your dog, with the primarily goal of getting a well
functioning dog at home. If it then turns out to be useless on shows and for
breeding, be happy that you got a wonderful family pet - and not the opposite.
Furthermore you've to consider, whether you want a dog or a bitch and
what colour, you prefer.
In my opinion a male dog is more difficult to educate than a bitch. On the other hand he bonds a
bit more with his owner than a bitch does. He may develop difficulties to be with
others male dogs, but choosing a bitch doesn't necessarily guarantee that she agrees with
all other dogs.
With bitches, you've think about, how to handle her seasons. She get in heat
every 6-12 months. Seasons have never meant problems in our house, but
we've always had bitches, which bled very little. There are Bull Terrier
bitches, which bleed more heavily. Our bitches are used to wearing
"trousers", when they're in rooms with carpets, but they should be
without them for some time of the day. So if you've got carpets all over your
house. It might make things difficult.
When the bitch is matured, it's a possibility to spay her.
If you've already got a dog, you must consider your dog's sex, when you choose
sex on your new dog.
A lot of people, who're looking for a Bull Terrier, want a coloured. Most people,
who have already had a Bull Terrier, want a white. Even though I myself prefer
white Bull Terriers, I'll never let the colour or the markings determine,
which dog I'll choose.
Temperament and health - even exterior - should be more important, when you
choose a dog.
It's sometimes possible to buy a older puppy or a grown up dog. If the
dog has been treated correctly, it has it's advantages. The dog is already house
trained, it can be alone longer time and it's easier for your to evaluate
temperament, health and looks.
