The Bull Terrier

The standard, which you can get at your kennel club (you can find the English standard on this site) is the description of, how a Bull Terrier should look/be. It's the breeders' and the judges' guidelines.

A lot of the things mentioned in the standard are important for your dog's health. For example - if a dog moves correctly, it will be more mobile at old age.

All Bull Terriers have faults. As a principal rule faults and virtues are carried (maybe hidden) by both parents. Always judge a dog on it's virtues compared to it's faults - never the other way around. Rather a dog with great virtues and few faults than a dog with no faults and no virtues.
It's more common that a good dog produces bad puppies than a bad dog producing good puppies.

Note that if a dog wins a lot on a show, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's of international top class. Competition and judges are factors that must be counted into the equation.
Therefore it's important that the breeder keeps up with what happens internationally and that the breeders dogs are shown not only under all round and terrier judges, but also under breed judges.

  • How did the parents and related dog do on shows nationally and internationally under all round/terrier/breed judges? (If possible read judges' critics).

  • How's the breeders knowledge of ancestors of his/hers breeding stock?

  • Does the breeder keep him/herself updated on important international show results?

  • What considerations has the breeder made concerning exterior when planning the litter?

  • Can and will the breeder advice you on training, preparation and showing, if you want to show your dog?
