Health

The Bull Terrier

Just like within other breeds the Bull Terrier faces several hereditary diseases, for example allergies, deafness, luxating patellas, cryptorchidism, skin-, hearth- and kidney problems.

You can read about hereditary diseases within Bull Terrier in a lot of the books written about the breed. Books, which breeders should have access to.

Quite a bit of research is also being done within this area.

In general hereditary diseases are inherited from both parents and can be carried hidden. That means both parents carry the disease (or fault), without be actually ill themselves. For that reason it's very important that breeders have a great knowledge of genetics as well as the health of ancestors to their breeding stock.
It's also useful for breeders to have personal international connections, through which they can obtain knowledge.

A dogs health doesn't entirely depend on heritage. The breeder's feeding and caring as well as your efforts within the same areas are also important factors.
Have a good look at the bitch, while the puppies are still small. At that time, her body is under extreme pressure, so if she looks well and healthy, it's a good sign. But remember it'll always show on a bitch, when she has puppies.

A question often asked is, how old a Bull Terrier gets. In general everything above 10 years is good, but lately I've seen lots of Bull Terrier getting much older - in style.

  • Are parents and dogs from the same bloodlines healthy?

  • How is the bitch's condition after she got the puppies?

  • Which considerations has the breeder made concerning health, when planning the litter?

  • Does the breeder have sufficient knowledge of hereditary diseases and genetics?

  • What is the breeder's standard of feeding and care taking?

  • Can and will the breeder advice you on health, feeding and care taking?
